I have a secret food-lover’s weapon. Yes, it’s a gadget, but it’s not one that’s found in too many kitchens. Can you guess? My secret food-lover’s weapon is my printer!
See, around here, Ward’s job is to cook delicious food. My job is to find new recipes and tastes, eat whatever he cooks up, and then write about it. (You know that saying, it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it?)
Last week I discovered something. If I find something I like, and print it out (I love those food blogs out there that have a “print this” link, by the way. Need to scout around and find one for here) - anyway, if I do that, and hand the printout over to Ward, chances are extremely good that what I’ve discovered gets made, as a snack. These Crab rangoon steered me in the right direction.
So I’ve been on a roll. When I ran out of ink the other day, I was a sorry sight, let me tell you. But a quick trip out to Staples, and we were back in business.
The other day, I handed Ward this recipe for Deep Fried Shrimp Balls from Tastes of Home. (The beauty of using the printer is that your printout includes the link to the blog and the page where you discovered whatever great dish it happens to be.)
Today, I was knee deep in a deadline, but there was that marvelous deep-fried scent in the air. You know the one. I can get hungry just smelling that aroma. Then Ward came in with a plate and announced, “Here’s a snack.”
I’m embarrassed to say I scarfed down most of these little shrimp balls before I remembered I’m a food blogger now and my camera is supposed to get first taste of everything. Here’s what the plate looked like once I remembered I’d better take a picture - I moved the dipping sauces onto the plate to take up the spare empty space that used to be the home of all the shrimp balls I’d already eaten:
Were they good? Oh my. Yes, they were. A nice little taste of dim sum. Crispy on the outside, savory-soft on the inside. I ate several without the dip and they were very good plain. Great with the dip, too. I’ve put in another request for this dish.
Have I mentioned I love my printer?

This reminds me of the shrimp toast my parents used to make for their annual Christmas party. It was very similar, except the mixture was put on little triangles of bread and then deep fried. They didn’t serve dip with it, but I remember it being delicious!
